Oceanside Skateparks Project: The Skatepark Ad-Hoc Committee and Grindline Skateparks, Inc., have completed the final concept for the first two skateparks, which will be built at Melba Bishop Park and Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Each park will be constructed of concrete and will have a signature design unique to each location. The Melba Bishop Park site which is generally a flat area, lent itself to a “street” style layout that will include various ledges, banks, hips, rails, stairs and gaps for a well-rounded skateboarding experience. The Martin Luther King Jr. Park site with its hills and valleys was the ideal location for a “flow” style layout. This park will include a gently sloping bowl area with various “skateable” elements which will be connected to a deeper swimming pool-like feature that will accommodate multiple riders. Both parks will be places where skaters can ride in many ways, to develop and refine their skills and to express themselves through the physical activity of skateboarding. The City of Oceanside will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the opening of the first neighborhood “Skate Spot” on Saturday December 20, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park located at 4300 Mesa Drive in Oceanside. The public is invited to join Mayor Jim Wood and the Oceanside City Council in celebrating the opening of the new skatepark feature at MLK Park.
