Pre-election News for Oceanside's General Municipal Election

Potential Candidates and Political Action Committees (PAC's)

Oceanside's General Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. There are two (2) positions open for election on the City Council. For those people interested in running for one of these seats, the filing period for candidates is July 14 - August 8, 2014. Only during this candidate filing period can the official nomination papers be issued and returned to the City Clerk's Office.

At the time your nomination papers are issued, City Clerk staff will check your voter registration status and will provide you with a Candidate Handbook, which will include all the information necessary to run for office. Please set aside 20-30 minutes to fill out paperwork and ask any questions you may have. It is advisable to make an appointment to ensure the City Clerk or Assistant City Clerk are available when you come in.

There is a non-refundable $25 filing fee due at the time you pull your nomination papers. If you choose to submit a Candidate's Statement of Qualifications to be printed in the Sample Ballot, there is an additional cost due upon the return of your papers. Again, this is an optional cost.

Be aware that forms may need to be filed now, such as the "Form 501: Candidate Intention Statement." This is your declaration of intent to run for office. All candidates must file Form 501 prior to soliciting contributions. For those candidates/committees planning to receive or expend $1,000 or more during the campaign, you will need to file a "Form 410: Statement of Organization." Therefore, before any expenditures or contributions, please contact the City Clerk's office regarding the current election laws covering campaign funds.

Others Involved in the Election

If you will be independently involved in political campaign contributions to and/or expenditures regarding candidates or any potential ballot measures for the upcoming Oceanside Municipal Election on November 4, 2014, you may need to register as a Political Action Committee (PAC) under requirements prescribed by the California Political Reform Act. Contact the City Clerk's Office to find out more information and to be in compliance with California Election laws.
