Oceanside Police Cadet Internship and Scholarship

The Oceanside Police Department believes in promoting the policing profession as a lifelong career. A formal education is necessary to be successful in the future police profession.

The Department has twenty-hour-per-week paid cadet positions. Each selected individual will receive a scholarship for tuition and expenses up to $2,000 at a community college, reimbursing up to $500 for tuition and expenses each semester for two years.

Eligibility Requirements

The following are the minimum eligibility requirements and will be used for judging the applicants in the Oceanside Police Cadet Internship and Scholarship Program.

  1. The applicant must complete the application form and return it to the City of Oceanside Human Resources Office.
  2. The applicant must graduate and have attained a GPA of at least 2.5 in high school and maintain it while enrolled at a community college with a minimum of twelve units each semester. Failure to maintain the minimum 2.5 GPA or semester units will result in loss of cadet internship and scholarship.
  3. Applicant must enroll at college in a program to obtain a degree or certificate in a field related to the policing profession. It will be the applicant's responsibility to demonstrate how the selected field of study is related to the policing profession.
  4. Residents of the City of Oceanside will be given preference; however, it is not mandatory for an applicant to be a resident of Oceanside.
  5. Applicant must be at least eighteen years old at the time of starting cadet internship and receiving scholarship. The applicant cannot be eligible to apply for the position of Police Officer with the City of Oceanside.
  6. Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, employers, etc.
  7. Applicant must successfully pass police background check, polygraph test, medical and psychological tests, and drug screening before final selection.

Judging

A panel of two community members and an Oceanside Police Department representative will review all applications. The review panel, in conjunction with the application review, will interview each applicant. The review panel will judge and score each applicant as follows:

Application 1-30 points
Essay (grammar, originality, spelling, punctuation, expression) 1-30 points
Interview 1-40 points
Total Possible:   100 points

The number of successful applicants to be invited to continue with the background process is dependent upon the number of positions available to fill. This number varies based on funding availability.
