Lieutenant Karen Laser was born and raised in La Mesa, California, and graduated from Helix High School. She then attended San Diego State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She began her law enforcement career with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1990, and in 1992 lateraled to the Oceanside Police Department.
As an officer, Lieutenant Laser was a Field Training Officer, a member of the Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NETWork) and was assigned to the North County Gang Task Force. As a Detective she investigated crimes in the Property, Family Protection and Crimes of Violence units within the Investigation’s Division. In 2004 she promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant in 2006. As a Sergeant she supervised Patrol teams, and as Detective Sergeant she supervised the Property, Crimes of Violence and Robbery-Homicide Units. In 2011 she was promoted to Lieutenant and she currently works in the Field Operations Division as the Watch Commander working Sunday through Wednesday.
