WATER SAVING TIPS

15 Ways to Save Water Outdoors

  1. Water only in the late evening or early morning hours to reduce evaporation and interference from wind.
  2. Don't overwater. Reduce each irrigation cycle by 1-3 minutes or eliminate one irrigation cycle per week.
  3. Use a hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle to water landscaped areas not irrigated by a landscape irrigation system.
  4. Water only after the top inch of soil is dry.
  5. Reset irrigation controllers and replace batteries in the spring and fall.
  6. Adjust sprinklers to prevent overspray and run-off.
  7. Repair leaks and broken sprinkler heads.
  8. Add 2" to 3" of mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation.
  9. Install water-efficient drip irrigation system for trees, shrubs and flowers to get water to the plant's roots more efficiently.
  10. Upgrade to a weather-based "Smart" irrigation controller that automatically applies water to the plants only when they need it.
  11. Replace unused lawn areas with low water-use plants.
  12. Use a broom instead of a hose to wash down patios and driveways.
  13. Wash vehicles at a commercial car wash or use a bucket or hose with a shut-off nozzle. Avoid washing during hot conditions when increased evaporation requires more water.
  14. Repair all water leaks.
  15. Install covers on pools and spas to reduce evaporation.
