Meet Oceanside Creek Friends

Oceanside Creek Friends

The Oceanside Creek Friends want to help you learn more about the pollution of our creeks, rivers, lakes and oceans. Because the Creek Friends live in or near the water, they are very concerned about keeping the water clean for themselves, their families and you!

Surfing Sam:
SamBorn on February 16, 2001, in Loma Alta Creek, even small Sam was a very active and concerned duck. He began surfing at four months old and became so good that everyone started calling him Surfing Sam. About three months later, Surfing Sam got sick while surfing at the beach. He wanted to know why and how he got sick. So he started a list of all the possible reasons.

After crossing out many possibilities off his list, Surfing Sam realized that storm drain pipes could be one reason why he got sick. After a lot of investigating, Surfing Sam found out that storm drain pipes let water from the city dump directly into the beach. This water is polluted with all kinds of chemicals, soaps, bacteria, and metals. But still, Surfing Sam wanted to know how those pollutants got into the water that pours onto the beach. He found out that many of the things we do in our daily lives pollute the water. He promised that for the rest of his life he was going to teach everyone about water pollution, so he and two of his friends formed the Creek Friends Team. As the leader of the team, Surfing Sam does a lot of speaking for the group.

MarinaBorn on June 28, 2001, in the ocean waters near the Oceanside Harbor, Marina was a friendly and playful fish. She loves to spend hours swimming around and playing with the other ocean animals. One day, Marina’s friend Surfing Sam became sick. After Surfing Sam found out how he became sick, he taught Marina about storm water pollution. She is very concerned for all the people and animals that swim at the beach. So now, Marina helps Surfing Sam teach everyone about water pollution. As the fun-loving and very caring part of the Creek Friends team, Marina likes to work with people.

SimonBorn on October 18th, 2001, on the banks of the San Luis Rey River, Simon was very interested in science and reading. Not a very social or playful turtle, Simon spent most of his days studying and reading all about watersheds. After meeting Surfing Sam and Marina one day while walking home from school, Simon became very interested in water pollution and promised to learn all about how pollutants make our water dirty. As the scientist of the team, Simon helps Surfing Sam, Marina and everyone else know why certain pollutants are bad and what we can do help protect our water.
