City of Oceanside & Junior Girl Scout Troop 1340 Partner for Beach Recycling

Recycling at Buccaneer Beach with Expansion to all Oceanside Beaches

September 8, 2011

Visitors to Oceanside beaches will now have a place to drop off plastic water bottles, aluminum beverage cans, paper, and even glass.  Thanks to a partnership between the City of Oceanside and Junior Girl Scout Troop 1340 two recycling receptacles will be permanently placed at Buccaneer Beach.

"The City of Oceanside is thrilled to work with Junior Girl Scout Troop 1340 to make the vision of recycling at Oceanside's beaches a reality," said Colleen Foster, Management Analyst for solid waste and recycling, City of Oceanside.  “The receptacles at Buccaneer Beach are just the start of a new program that will place a total of 90 recycling bins on all Oceanside beaches from the northern stretch of the harbor to the south end of the strand by 2013.”  This new public recycling program at Oceanside’s beaches will help the City meet its newly adopted Zero Waste goals of 75 percent diversion by 2020, keeping recyclables out of the landfill.

As part of their Bronze Award service project, Troop 1340 decided that they wanted to exemplify the Girl Scout Law “to use resources wisely and make the world a better place.” Offering a permanent, attractive recycling receptacle to beachgoers fits well with the Troop’s goal to give back to the community through a sustainable project that would last.

“Working with the City of Oceanside has been a wonderful learning experience and leadership opportunity for the girls,” said Alyssa Schrom, leader of Junior Girl Scout Troop 1340.  “Now, Buccaneer Beach has a beautiful, permanent recycling receptacle.  Not only will this bin help to keep the beach and our ocean clean, but the girls will be able to look back years from now and know that they made a difference – not only in the community but in the world.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available for other organizations and businesses like Troop 1340 who would like to show their commitment to the environment and have their name prominently and permanently displayed on a recycling receptacle.  For more information, please contact Colleen Foster (760) 435-5021 or cfoster@ci.oceanside.ca.us.
