Oceanside Celebrates the 14th Annual "Senior Citizen's Day" and Expo

September 19, 2011

The 14th Annual "Senior Citizen's Day" and EXPO, a day to celebrate all seniors in Oceanside, will be held at the El Corazon Senior Center, located at 3302 Senior Center Drive in Oceanside, on Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. This is a free, family-friendly event, open to all ages. The event will feature senior-specific resources, entertainment, food, door and raffle prizes, health and wellness information and demonstrations.

Also on this day, in celebration of personal excellence, selfless community volunteerism, and vitality to the community of Oceanside, the 2011 “Senior of the Year” Award will honor Ms. Viessa Lyons-Ferrell. Ms. Ferrell has been a member of the Oceanside community since 1998. Viessa is a life-long volunteer, beginning her service in high school as a USO volunteer. For the better part of her life she worked as a nurse, sharing with others her warm spirit and loving heart. Upon relocating from the Los Angeles area to Oceanside, Viessa became instantly involved in the Oceanside community through her volunteerism at the Oceanside Senior Center, in various positions on the Oceanside Senior Commission, and with the local chapter of the Kiwanis. Viessa is also an accomplished poet and has written several pieces which are published through the International Library of Poetry.

On September 28, 2011, at a regularly scheduled Oceanside City Council Meeting, Mayor Jim Wood will proclaim October 8, 2011, as “Senior Citizen’s Day” in Oceanside and will dedicate this day to Ms. Viessa Lyons-Ferrell as the honored “Senior of the Year”.
