| | | 2012 MLK Scholarship AwardsMay 17, 2012 Fifteen students from five different high schools will share $30,000 in scholarship funds as recipients of the 2012 City of Oceanside – Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards. The students will be introduced at the annual garden reception, which will be held on Friday, June 1, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy. The garden reception is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship program; tickets for the evening at $35 per person are available at the door or by calling (760) 722-1234. All funds raised at the garden reception go directly to the scholarship program; the City of Oceanside sponsors the program but no public funds are used in the program.
Local business and corporate sponsors provide funds for the reception itself. The program has awarded $505,000 to 245 students since the first scholarships were announced in 1993. The scholarship program is open to all high school seniors who live in the City of Oceanside regardless of which high school they attend. Applicants must write an essay on how they will apply the life and teachings of Dr. King to their own lives. This essay plus demonstrated financial need are the major criteria for the awards. For more information on the scholarship program and when applications will be available for the 2013 awards, call (760) 435-3393.
