On August 4, 2012 at approximately 12:23 a.m., Police were flagged down regarding a fight in the 400 block of North Coast Hwy. The victim, Rivas, was found unconscious lying on the sidewalk at that location. Rivas was transported to Scripps Trauma Center in critical condition. The other involved party returned to the scene and identified himself as the person who was involved in the physical altercation with the injured man. The 25–year-old Hemet resident essentially told police the victim was one of three men who assaulted him, and that he was defending himself when the victim sustained his injuries. He reportedly did not know the men who assaulted him or the motive for the attack. There is no evidence that weapons were involved in this altercation.
Police believe there is a strong likelihood there are more witnesses to the altercation, and are asking anyone with information to call Oceanside Detective T.J. Dunn at (760) 435-4054. Witnesses can remain anonymous.
