Oceanside Police Investigate Series of Three Attempted Carjackings

December 13, 2012

On December 13, 2012 an unidentified suspect attempted to carjack three different victims in the Target Store parking lot located in the 2200 block of El Camino Real. All three women escaped without injury, and the suspect is still outstanding.

Today at approximately 2:50 p.m. Police were dispatched to the Target Store, 2255 El Camino Real, to investigate the report of three attempted carjackings. Officers searched the area for the suspect with negative results. The suspect reportedly approached the first woman as she was exiting her car in the parking lot. He brandished what she believed to be a knife and ordered her back into her car. She got back into the car and drove away, leaving the suspect behind. The suspect immediately approached another woman exiting her car in the parking lot. He brandished a handgun, and ordered her back into the car as well. This victim ignored the suspect and ran into the Target Store to report the incident. The suspect then approached a third woman in the parking lot as she was exiting her car, and attempted to steal her vehicle at gunpoint. He ordered her to remove the "club" device from her steering wheel and leave her car keys in the vehicle. She removed the "club" device, left the car keys in the vehicle, and walked away into the Target Store to report the incident. Before leaving, she activated a kill switch of some type that disabled the ignition. The suspect unsuccessfully attempted to start the car, and became locked in the vehicle; he smashed a window to exit the car and fled the scene.

The suspect was described as a WMA, 40's to 60's in age, no facial hair noted, thin build and "leathery" skin. He was in possession of a black backpack and was described as transient in appearance. The suspect was wearing a blue denim jacket, pink shirt and blue jeans. The investigation is ongoing.
