Road Closures in Downtown Oceanside on July 4th
July 1, 2013
Oceanside, CA – On Thursday, July 4, 2013, the City of Oceanside will host the annual Fourth of July Celebration. The Sunset Market will also be operating with expanded hours from 2:00 pm to 9:30 pm. These events are expected to draw a significant amount of people and vehicles into the beach and downtown areas. It is the goal of the Oceanside Police Department for everyone attending these events to have a safe and enjoyable day. As a reminder, the City of Oceanside will not be hosting a fireworks show on July 4th.
On July 4th, most of the municipal parking lots in the area will be available to the general public, but a few lots have been restricted for the sole use of the various vendors attending these events. These lots will be clearly marked. Municipal parking lot 28, just north of the Junior Seau Beach Community Center on The Strand, has been set aside for handicap parking only. Those visitors choosing to park in this lot should be aware that the ability to leave during the afternoon hours will be extremely restricted and you will probably experience a significant delay if you try to leave during that time.
Vehicular access to The Strand and Pacific Street between Wisconsin Avenue and the harbor will be restricted to residents from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Residents of these streets who live south of Mission Avenue should access the area from Wisconsin Avenue. Those residents who live between Mission Avenue and Surfrider Way should access that area from Mission Avenue. Meanwhile, those residents who live north of Surfrider Way should use Surfrider Way to access that area. Southbound traffic will not be permitted over the Dan Bessant Memorial (Pacific Street) bridge.
All residents are encouraged to use the nearest cross street to their residences to minimize the amount of vehicular traffic on Pacific Street as the primary use of the roadway is intended for bicyclists. Bicyclists will not be permitted on The Strand. Residents of The Strand should be aware that we anticipate the amount of pedestrian traffic on The Strand to be very heavy by early afternoon; therefore, the ability to access your residences may be limited and probably delayed significantly.
As for the Sunset Market, this will result in the total closure to vehicular traffic of Tremont Street between Mission Avenue and Civic Center, and Pierview Way between Coast Highway and Cleveland Street. Also, southbound traffic will not be permitted on Cleveland Street between Mission Avenue and Civic Center. These road closures will begin at 11:00 am and will continue until 11:00 pm.
Lastly, due to the 9:00 pm fireworks show at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s Del Mar Beach, we anticipate the harbor area to remain congested until well after that event. Therefore, vehicular traffic will not be permitted to enter the harbor via Harbor Drive from 9:00 pm until approximately 11:00 pm. Motorist will be permitted to access the harbor via the Dan Bessant Memorial (Pacific Street) bridge during that time, but are advised to expect very heavy traffic and little to no available public parking. To access Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton through the Del Mar gate during this time, motorists will have to use westbound Harbor Drive from outside of the harbor. Vehicular traffic exiting the harbor will be required to travel eastbound on Harbor Drive. No traffic will be permitted to continue northbound to the Del Mar gate.
Maps of these road closures will be posted on the Oceanside Police Department’s website.
