OFD Lifeguards Present Guardian 1
November 1, 2010
November 1, 2010, by Lifeguard Sergeant Blake Faumuina- The Oceanside Fire Dept. Lifeguard Division would like to present our new rescue vessel, the Guardian I. Previously an Oceanside Harbor Patrol boat, the Commercial Boston Whaler model Challenger 27 was retired and stored in a lot for approximately 14 years. Due to the fact it was unprotected from the elements for so many years, a complete restoration was necessary. This was done by the capable hands of the locally-based Oceanside Marine Center. For some impressive photos of the transformation visit the Oceanside Marine Centre.
Guardian I is 31ft LOA outfitted with new twin Honda 200hp outboard engines. An Armstrong transom bracket has been added to increase fuel efficiency and maneuverability. The main deck has been remodeled to a flat open platform and open transom for rescue operations. Guardian I also carries electronic navigational equipment including GPS, Radar, and Sonar. Officially, Guardian I will be” utilized as a Lifeguard Rescue Vessel to supplement Lifeguard Division rescue operations for the City of Oceanside and its coastline.”
The vessel will be operated by two Lifeguards- one as deck hand/ rescue swimmer and other as operator. Cargo: Water rescue equipment, emergency medical equipment, public safety dive equipment. Once a light bar and some radio equipment is added it will be complete.
If you are interested in seeing it, it can be viewed at the Oceanside Harbor Patrol pier across from their headquarters at the Oceanside Marina.
