Police Request Assistance From Public
August 24, 2011
On August 16, 2011at 5:25 p.m. Police were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Boomvang Court to investigate the report of a shooting. Police located two assault victims at the residence; a 74-year-old woman had sustained a gunshot wound to a lower extremity and a 40-year-old man had sustained an injury to the head after being struck (“pistol whipped”) with a handgun. The suspect has been identified as 48–year-old Rodney Petty. Petty is still outstanding. The red truck he was driving on the day of the incident has been recovered.
Petty reportedly came to the victim’s home on Boomvang Court and an argument started between him and a resident regarding finances. The 74-year-old female victim, an uninvolved resident, went into the garage to avoid the argument. The suspect struck (pistol whipped) the male victim on the head with a handgun during the argument and walked away from the residence. As the suspect walked past the garage he discharged the handgun, striking the female victim in the lower extremity. Both victims were airlifted to Scripps trauma center and have since been released.
Petty is believed to be driving a 1988 Maroon Cadillac (CA. 2LPH938). We are asking for anyone with information on Petty’s whereabouts to contact the Oceanside Police Dispatch Center at 760 435-4900 or Detective Marilyn Johnson at 760 435-4732. It is also appropriate to call 911if he is seen in public. Petty is considered armed and dangerous so it’s important not to attempt contact with him.
