Traffic Control is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of 159 traffic signals, 8,300+ street lights, 20,000+ roadway signs, and all pavement striping and legends. Traffic signal and street light maintenance includes preventative maintenance, emergency response, new construction inspection, minor improvements and service request response.
To report a burned out street light, please use an address when available and as much detail as possible to help our electricians locate the street light. It’s very helpful to include your name and call back number. We strive to repair street lights within 5 working days.
Citywide LED Light Retrofit Project - Public Works completed the replacement of approximately 7,700 street lights in early January 2015 from high-pressure sodium to LED. The new LED lights are at least 50% more efficient than the existing high-pressure sodium lights, and will amount to a reduction in energy of approximately 2.6 million kWh per year as well as a reduction in carbon dioxide of approximately 1.7 million pounds per year. The first phase of the project included the replacement of street lights in the public right-of-way. The second phase of the project was completed in February 2016 and included the replacement of approximately 900 lights in parks, parking lots, the pier, and the downtown area. The third phase of the project will start in spring/summer of 2016 and will include approximately 300 remaining lights in city parks and facilities.
