Mobile Businesses

Mobile businesses is a category of businesses that encompass different maintenance and cleaning activities including powerwashing of hard surfaces, window washing, pool maintenance, vehicle detailing, and carpet, drape and furniture cleaning, to name a few. These businesses have a high potential of generating polluted runoff if proper pollution prevention measures are not implemented during cleaning activities. Businesses of this type are not allowed to let any wash water enter the storm drain system. Mobile businesses are required to capture any dirty water generated during the cleaning process and properly dispose of that dirty water, preferably in a landscaped area. If the landscape area cannot filter the wash water without running off into the street or there is no landscape area for disposal call the Clean Water Program at 760-435-4500 for alternative disposal options.

The City of Oceanside has a brochure for powerwashers  (955 KB) that gives a general overview of the urban runoff regulations, how urban runoff affects our local waterbodies and tips for preventing storm water pollution.

Another valuable resource for Mobile Businesses is the County of San Diego’s Project Clean Water website. On this page you will find information specific to various types of mobile businesses.

Also a copy of a presentation about Best Management Practices (BMPs) specific to Mobile Businesses is available to you:
Best Management Practices for carpet cleaning, mobile washing/detailing, window washing, pool maintenance, fire sprinkler system maintenance and pressure washing  (1.5 MB)

Report any water running in the street when it is not raining or someone dumping something in the storm drain or curb and gutter by calling the
