Food Scraps Recycling at Home
January 2024 – Residential Curbside Food Scraps Recycling
The City’s current franchise collection agreement with Waste Management, which expires December 31, 2023, does not include the provision of food scraps recycling to residential customers. In 2022 the City of Oceanside will be finalizing a competitive procurement process to obtain full-spectrum residential organic waste processing services; this includes yard waste, food scraps, food-soiled paper, meat, bones and dairy. This service is expected to begin once the new agreement commences in January 2024. Food Scraps Recycling is currently available for Multi-Family and Commercial Customers.

Backyard Compost Program
Compost is organic matter, such as food scraps and yard waste, that has decomposed to create a nutrient-rich soil amendment. By keeping your organics out of the landfill, you prevent the production and release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Compost also improves soil quality, biodiversity, and moisture retention. Composting is simple and it can be done at your home, apartment, office, or even classroom! Use the below guides, videos, and resources to start composting at home today.
Static Composting (Typically for homes with larger backyards)
Vermicomposting (Best for small households and/or those with limited space)
