Resources

The City's Housing & Neighborhood Services Department staff work at the Community Center to assist residents and provide resources, referrals, and services that address mental health, social services, and overall well-being. They can help with needs such as food distributions, medical and transportation assistance, job training opportunities, and community events.

Landes Libary

The Oceanside Public Library completed a Community Engagement Project in 2023 to better assess the needs of the neighborhood surrounding Landes Community Center.  As a result, staff has opened a Library inside the Landes Community Center. The Library offers books for all ages, study rooms, computer access, online resources, free family programs and more. Stop by and say hello!

Park Features

John Landes Park has 10 beautiful acres of features. Amenities include a barbeque and picnic area, baseball fields, basketball courts, drinking fountain, multi-purpose field, play equipment, restrooms, softball fields, tennis courts, a skateboarding area, and free parking.  Skatepark improvements were identifed through several community outreach meetings in 2023 and staff is securing funding to begin.

History

Who was John Landes?

John Hodel Landes was born in 1879 in Bavaria and came to America in 1893. He was a pioneer Oceanside resident who served as Oceanside City Clerk for 32 years, and never stopped contributing throughout his lifetime. The land for the park's development was purchased nearly 60 years ago in 1964. Landes Park was named for him at a 1967 dedication ceremony.  Mr. Landes lived for many years on the corner of Clementine and Missouri Streets until his death in 1970.

Facility Reactivation

The John Landes Community Resource Center closed in 2008 due to funding cuts associated with the Great Recession.  During that time, MiraCosta College leased the building for onsite classes. When that lease expired in 2023, the Center was reactivated in 2023 with American Rescue Plan Act funding and initiated renovations, new services and programs, the addition of a Library and computers, and improvements to the park such as new lighting and fencing.  Additional facility improvements included a shade structure in the patio areas and an upgrade to the patio play area.  Skatepark improvements are on the way as well.

The first programming reactivated at the facility in 2023 was Parks and Recreation’s "Sunsational Summer Camp" program.  Additional activities were added such as an after-school program, recreational programs such as dance and tumbling, and adult programs like aikido and aerobics.

In 2024, the City's half-cent sales tax contributed to a community mural on the building involving Oceanside youth in the design and painting.

Plans for the Future

In 2024, it was announced that the City would receive $1 million from the federal government, secured by Representative Mike Levin, to develop a master plan for the Community Center and park.  The Master Plan will be used to guide future investments in various upgrades and will include the preparation of architectural and engineering plans to establish shovel-ready projects.
