Field Closures
A majority of City of Oceanside fields are subject to field closures during the summer and winter. The Park Maintenance Department under Public Works needs time to make sure the fields are in the best condition they can be. Oceanside multipurpose sports fields are heavily impacted six days a week by many different youth and adult activities, programs, and leagues. The closures listed below are the only way to create quality and safe playing fields during the open months. In the summer, fields are closed for rest, repair, aeration, fertilization, over seeding, restoration, and heavy watering cycles. In the winter, fields close for rest, repair, aeration, and fertilization.
Below is the list of parks that close with the date range they are closed for:
- Mance Buchanon Park - May 5 through July 20
- Jim Wood Park - June 1 through August 17
- Lake Park - June 1 through August 17
- MLK Park - June 1 through August 17
- Luiseno - June 9 through August 14
- John Landes (soccer) - June 16 through August 24
- Balderrama Park - August 18 through October 26
The following multipurpose sports fields close the entire month of December:
- Lake Park - all fields
- Mance Buchanon - all fields
- John Landes Park - multipurpose soccer field only
- Jim Wood Park at RDO - all fields
- Martin Luther King Jr. Park - multipurpose soccer fields

Rainout Information
In general, a quarter (.25) inch of rain will put all multipurpose sports fields into closure for a minimum of one day depending on drying temperatures. Rain out updates are sent directly to permitted groups and can be found on Oceanside Parks & Rec social media outlets (@oceansiderec on Facebook and Instagram).
Additional rain out information:
- Permitted groups utilizing tennis courts, pickleball courts, or the MLK rink: please use your best judgment. If there are puddles or slick areas, do not continue with the scheduled practice.
- If sports organization choose to play in the rain or on wet turf while fields are closed, they are responsible for compensation of any damage to the fields.
Field Use Guidelines
Do not use the field if:
- It has recently rained.
- The sprinklers have recently been on.
- There is standing water on any area.
- There is mud anywhere on the use area.
- If your activity will damage playing area.
Preventing damage to fields/parks:
- Do not use roundup, grass killer, or any other product that kills or damages turf or landscaping.
- Do not tag, use graffiti, or vandalize the park
- Do not drive or park on the grass, track, dirt, or landscaping areas.
- Do not drive steaks or poles into the turf or landscaping areas.
- Park any and all vehicles only in designated areas.
