Depending on traffic usage, some commercial streets are swept several times a week while residential areas and less impacted roads are swept on a bi-monthly schedule. The street sweeping team is assigned to 40 alternating routes to ensure that approximately 2,400 curb/median miles are swept every month. Since parked vehicles impede the sweeper’s ability to clean the outer edges of the roads, the City posts parking enforcement signs for specific days and times. In addition to their assigned routes, the street sweeper team often responds to calls to assist Police, Fire, Water, and any other City department that require their services.

FUN FACTS:

• The Street Sweeper’s water tank holds 220 gallons of water and has to be filled three times per day. The water spraying in front of the rotating brooms helps with dust control.
• The Water Quality Control Board mandates street sweeping in coastal communities.
• Used street sweeping brooms are recyclable.
• The rear tires of the sweeper are solid (or “poly-filled”) to protect them from the damaging debris they run over daily.
