Follow these Best Management Practices (BMPs) at the back of your establishment and in your landscaped areas to ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements.

Bin Storage - Store food scraps, recyclables, landfill containers and grease/tallow bins inside a secure and lockable enclosure. Bins must not be overloaded so the lids can close fully when not in use. If you need additional pickup services from Waste Management, call 760-439-2824.

1. Breakdown Boxes - Breakdown cardboard boxes before placing in your recyclable container.  
2. The Clear Way - Place recyclables and food scraps in clear plastic liners or place freely in bins. Use black liners for landfill containers.
3.  Clean Out Bins - Clean enclosures regularly, using dry methods like sweeping or dry steam cleaning to remove debris. Free annual cleaning of food scraps, recyclables and landfill containers, and graffiti removal are available upon request through WM, call 760-439-2824.
4. Close & Lock Bins - Close and lock lids of all containers when not in use, including grease bins for used cooking oil.  
5.  Clean Outdoor Hardscape Areas - Keep loading/unloading areas, parking lots and drive-through free of trash, spills and stains using dry methods (sweeping, brushing, steam cleaning) to keep pollution out of storm drains.  
6. Maintain Landscaped Areas & Irrigation - Maintain landscaping and common areas to prevent irrigation runoff and erosion. Request your landscaper to check irrigation systems for broken lines and sprinkler heads and replace if necessary.
7. Prevent Overspray - Request your landscaper adjust sprinklers to prevent over-spray onto sidewalks and streets and runoff into the storm drain. Cover slopes with plants and mulch to prevent erosion.  

8. Minimize & Safely Store Chemicals - Minimize use of pesticides, fertilizer and other chemicals. Store in a safe, secure location.
