Agricultural and landscape businesses have the potential to introduce various types of pollutants to stormwater including pesticides, fertilizers (nutrients), landscape trimmings, soil/sediment, trash, oil and bacteria. These businesses are often considered a high priority because of their ongoing outdoor operations.
The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board issued the General Agriculture Orders No. R9-2016-0004 and No. R9-2016-0005 (or Ag Orders, for short) to reduce agricultural runoff, improve water quality and protect California watersheds. This set forth water quality requirements for agricultural operations and created the Commercial Agriculture Regulatory Program. Enrollment in the Commercial Agriculture Regulatory Program is mandatory for all commercial agricultural operations in the San Diego Water Board’s jurisdiction. This includes farms, nurseries, orchards and vineyards that produce crops or ornamentals with the intent to make a profit. For more information and to enroll, check out the California Water Board's Commercial Agriculture Regulatory Program.
