The City of Oceanside is Committed to Zero Waste!

On March 17, 2021, City Council approved the 2020 Zero Waste Plan, which expands upon existing programming outlined in the 2012 Zero Waste Plan to allow the City to meet its zero waste goals, and maps out the next decade of zero waste programming, services, and compliance with State laws.

Program Highlights

Green Oceanside Waste Wizard

Not sure what goes where? The Waste Wizard can tell you how something can be reused, repaired, donated, recycled, or disposed of. View the Green Oceanside Waste Wizard and type the item you are trying to recycle in the box!

Impacts of Food Scraps in Landfills

Businesses, multi-family properties and single-family residents are required to separate organic material from landfill material as part of California law SB 1383. Organics like food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings are the largest waste stream in landfills. The decomposition of this material generates air pollutants such as methane gas which heats the planet and negatively impacts public health and the environment. These air emissions contribute to hotter summers, more frequent droughts, and wildfires, as well as increased risk of heart and lung disease.

Commercial & Multi-Family Food Scraps Recycling Program

The City of Oceanside and WM have partnered to provide recycling, food scraps, and waste programs to help Commercial & Multi-family properties to comply with California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) and local regulations, which mandate the proper separation of food scraps, recycling, food-soiled paper, green waste, and landfill materials. All Commercial & Multi-family properties are required to subscribe to collection services. Properly sorting and subscribing to collection service puts our city one step closer to achieving a 75-90% diversion rate! Visit the Commercial Business and/or the Multi-Family page for more information.

Single-Family Food Scraps Recycling Program

Beginning 2024, residential collection service was expanded to include the collection of food scraps and food-soiled paper along with green waste. These materials are to be placed in the green cart, now referred to as the Organics cart. For more information and tips, visit the Food Scraps Recycling at Home webpage.
