Food Scraps Recycling service is available for those living in apartments, town-homes and condos across Oceanside! The brown food scraps container accepts separated food waste and food-soiled paper into its own bin/cart.
Each apartment dweller in Oceanside received informational materials sent directly to them from Waste Management including a What Goes Where Poster and a Multi-Family Service Guide.
Participation is important to ensure this program is successful. It’s our goal to divert much of our organic waste from the landfill. You should have all three streams: Landfill, Recycling, and Food Scraps at your home. Not sure what goes where? Sorting is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Learn how to recycle right today by learning how to sort in your own home. Use these three tips and resources for success with the Food Scraps Recycling Program.
- Use the poster linked above to familiarize yourself where everything goes and pass it along in your household. Did you know food scraps include: meat, fish, bones, dairy, eggs, cheese, and shells along with fruit and vegetable peels and pits? Don’t forget about the paper too! Any food-soiled paper, towels, napkins, bags, and paper to-go packaging go in the brown bin.
- Set up three cans and sort in your kitchen, one for each stream (recyclables, food scraps, and landfill). Use the poster on the reverse side and post nearby.
- Decide on your own how often to empty your food scraps kitchen container. To make clean-up easy, line your kitchen food scrap container with paper bags, or newspaper before transferring the contents to your Organics cart. Clear or translucent plastic bags/liners and compostable plastic bags are allowed but not preferred. When ready, toss in the correct outdoor bin and don’t overload the bin as the lid must close.
With all your food scraps and food soiled paper going into the new bin, you’ll start to notice your trash bag is shrinking! What’s left in the trash should only be materials like squishy plastic food wrappers, foam take-out containers, single-use plastic utensils, sandwich baggies, and bathroom waste!

The City of Oceanside offers several convenient services to help residents safely dispose of large, hazardous, or reusable items that don’t belong in regular trash or recycling bins.
Large Item & Electronic Waste Pickup
Residents can schedule free curbside pickup of up to five large or electronic waste items, up to five times per year.
How it works:
- Call Waste Management at (760) 439-2824 to make an appointment.
- Place items curbside on your scheduled collection day.
- Waste Management will pick them up — it’s that simple!
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Disposal
Have paint, batteries, chemicals, or other hazardous materials?

Donation & Landfill Curbside Pickups
Twice a year, residents can take part in:
- Donation Weeks – Donate reusable items curbside to support the Oceanside Disabled American Veteran’s Thrift Store.
- Landfill Weeks – Dispose of items that cannot be reused.
Note: Items collected during Donation and Landfill Weeks do not count toward your five annual bulky item pickups.
