Chief's Corner - November 2022 Edition

With the holidays approaching I want to provide you with a few smart practices to help you enjoy this holiday season and prevent you from becoming a victim of theft. While you are out hunting for gifts, thieves will be out hunting for easy targets. During this busy time of year, many of us are rushing around from stores to gatherings and we easily forget to be aware of our surroundings.  Keep your eyes up and be aware of who is around you. Please be mindful while out shopping to never leave valuables like purses, phones, or wallets in shopping carts. It takes just seconds for a thief to swipe your belongings. Remember to always remove valuables from your vehicle. Do not leave anything of value in plain sight and when possible remove all items. Park in well-lit areas. Secure your vehicle and when possible bring a friend along to shop with you.

Protect your presents from porch pirates. When shopping online, schedule online deliveries for when you will be home or have them delivered to your workplace. Utilize services like Amazon locker so you can pick up items at your convenience. In shipping notes, request items are left out of view. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to be on the lookout for your delivery. And always if you see something, say something. Call us immediately if you see Grinches snatching gifts.

Throughout the month of November, we will share weekly reminders on our social media platforms to shop smart and stay safe throughout the holiday season. Follow the Oceanside Police Department on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for additional safety tips and upcoming department events.  Don’t forget there are a variety of career opportunities available at the Oceanside Police Department. Thank you and be safe.
