Citywide LED Street Light Retrofit Project -    Southern Contracting started the replacement of approximately 7,700 street lights in early September, and to date has completed 25% of the project.  The new LED lights will be at least 50% more efficient than the existing high-pressure sodium lights, and will amount to a reduction in energy of approximately 2.6 million kWH per year and reduction in carbon dioxide of approximately 1.7 million pounds per year.  The first phase of the project will take about 4 months and be completed by the end of the year.  The second phase of the project will begin in early 2015 and will include parking lot lighting in the Downtown area, Harbor, City parks and other City facilities.

The bill takes effect July 1, 2015.  SB 270 prohibits grocery stores, drugstores, and convenience stores from distributing single-use plastic bags, going into effect first in large grocery stores in July of 2015.  Stores can sell paper, durable reusable bags, and compostable bags with a minimum charge of 10 cents each.
