Oceanside mourns the passing of Gary Ernst   Oceanside City Treasurer Gary Ernst passed away of natural causes at age 61.  Mr. Ernst was a long time resident of Oceanside, active in the Oceanside Rotary and International Rotary and was an active member of the California Treasurers Association.  Gary held a BSM Degree from California State University Los Angeles; a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University and was a Certified Municipal Treasurer. 

In regard to the upcoming election, Oceanside Elections Code section 15402(b) states that in this scenario (two-person race less than 68 days before the election), the election goes forward.  If Mr. Ernst prevails, the office will be declared vacant and the City Council can fill the vacancy in a sixty-day time period following certification of the results, either by an appointment or by special election.

General Plan Update -  Get involved! The City of Oceanside is preparing a General Plan Update, the first phase of which involves two new General Plan elements addressing economic development and energy/climate action. The Economic Development Element will establish policies that support existing businesses, invite new businesses, facilitate employment readiness, promote job growth, and stimulate the expansion of commercial services.  The Energy/Climate Action Element will outline policies that encourage energy efficiency, renewable energy, alternative transportation, urban forestry, local food sourcing, water conservation, and other sustainable practices. We need your input!  Public Workshops will be held October 19 & October 27 at 5:30 in the City Council Chambers at 300 N. Coast Highway.





Economic Development News - Oceanside has a dynamic business climate with new restaurants, retail shops, and manufacturing businesses moving into the City. The City's Economic Development Division assists businesses with expansion and relocation to Oceanside by offering site searches, business visits, demographic and statistical information, and assistance with permit processing and business license issuance. Oceanside Transit Center Improvement Project -SANDAG's construction of the station improvement project is well underway and is expected to be complete in late 2017.  In September, crews completed the exisiting easternmost platform extension and added a new baggage cart crossing.  This construction milestone ensured that work could begin in early October on the new third track and platform near the southern end of the Transit Center. There will be intermittent nighttime work required.  The project will enhance the capacity and reliability of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) coastal rail corridor, improve schedule efficiencies and travel times, and modernize the station for a better rider experience. Oceanside Harbor dredging - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) contracted this year with CJW Construction, Inc. to perform the annual Oceanside Harbor Entrance Channel dredging job, the objective of which is to maintain a safe, navigable Harbor entrance for use by the Navy and recreational boaters. Fortunately, the sand dredged from the mouth of the Harbor is being placed on Oceanside's beaches. The contractor is currently working to complete a channel within the Harbor entrance that will be to the anticipated depth. The City was recently advised that the USACE contractor's estimated date of completion is now October 18, 2016.   260,000 cubic yards must be dredged from the Harbor mouth to ensure boater safety. The USACE is using a new contractor this year. For questions, please contact USACE staff at (213) 452-3923.





Oceanside General Municipal Election November 8 - Oceanside voters will cast ballots November 8 for positions including Mayor, two City Council seats, City Clerk, and City Treasurer. Fire Department Open House October 22 - Please join the Oceanside Fire Department at Fire Station 7 (3350 Mission Avenue) on Saturday, October 22 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. for an Open House.  View demonstrations, a helicopter visit, booths, and photos for children.  Bring the entire family!

Arts and Culture - The Arts are alive in Oceanside! The Fall season is brimming with exciting events like Dia de los Muertos at Mission San Luis Rey, the Oceanside Music Festival, First Friday Art Walk, and a myriad of great events and exhibitions at the world-class Oceanside Museum of Art.  Check link for details and make it a night to remember in Oceanside.





El Corazon Aquatics Center Update - The City Council authorized the planning and design of an Aquatics Center in El Corazon Park, in the heart of Oceanside. On November 4, 2015, the Council approved a Professional Services Agreement for the conceptual design and studies needed. On May 5, 2016, conceptual design and environmental studies were submitted to the Planning Department to start the approval process. The approval process is anticipated to be completed Fall of 2016. The El Corazon Aquatics Center will be North County San Diego's newest aquatics facility. This world-class aquatics center will provide competition-level amenities to serve Oceanside residents, school districts and host regional meets. In addition to competitive amenities, the aquatics center will accommodate recreational features for all. Main components will include a 56-meter competition pool, diving boards, instructional pool, splash pad, administrative offices, meeting rooms, large multi-purpose hall, locker rooms and outdoor recreational and viewing areas. The Aquatics Center will add to the active synergy already taking place within El Corazon Park with the SoCal Sport Complex, El Corazon Senior Center, and future residential and commercial development. City Council Meetings - October 12 and October 26 at 5:00 p.m. - The public is welcome for all City Council meetings in the Council Chambers at 300 N. Coast Highway. City Council meetings are also shown live on KOCT on two Wednesdays of each month and replayed throughout the week. Water Utilities News - Oceanside has a new web-based customer platform called WaterSmart.  Access information about your water usage, account, and obtain tips and notifications 24/7. Link above contains further information, as well as the announcement of a coming turf removal rebate program, and information on Oceanside's  Level One Drought Response and what that means for you and your family.  





Beach Restroom Project Update - In March of 2016, the entitlement and approval process began for the renovation of the beach restrooms adjacent to the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater and at Tyson Street Park. The restrooms near the amphitheater will have 14 unisex single-stall toilets, a beach maintenance office, storage, and a police garage. The current historic restroom building will be remodeled for Oceanside Police use. Plans include the renovations and upgrades of the beach access at the Mission Avenue, the south amphitheater plaza, and The Strand parking lot. Crews will be relocating the sewer lift pump station as well. The approval process is anticipated to be completed Fall of 2016, and construction is expected to begin in November 2017, pending funds, and be completed Spring 2019.

Call for Nominations - Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service AwardThe City of Oceanside annually honors a resident with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award.  This award is given to someone who exemplifies the philosophy and ideals of the late Dr. King. The award particularly emphasizes volunteer activity and service to the people and City of Oceanside by a person outside of a work setting for a minimum of two years. The Commission is now seeking nominations for the 2017 award. The honoree will be announced on January 16, 2017, at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast commemorating the life and work of Dr. King. Any resident of the City of Oceanside or member of the U. S. Armed Forces stationed at MCB Camp Pendleton may be nominated. The only qualification is volunteer activity and community service that has benefited the residents and the City of Oceanside.  Nominations must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Local Citrus Trees Facing Threat - A citrus disease called Huanglongbing (HLB) has recently been found in Southern California and all residents in Oceanside are asked to help stop the spread of the disease, which has been called a death sentence for California citrus. One of the best ways to prevent HLB from taking hold in our community is to stop the Asian citrus psyllid, a pest that can transmit the disease from tree to tree as it feeds.  For more information on how to identify and combat the disease, please visit  





Oceanside Public Library News - The Civic Center Library will be temporarily closed for a carpet and shelving project beginning Monday, October 31.  The Mission Branch Library, Mobile Libraries and Oceanside READS Literacy Center will not be affected, and the library's e-books and magazines and online services will remain available 24/7.  Thank you for your patience as we make these improvements.

Parks and Recreation Manager Eileen Turk Wins National Honor - The National Board of Women in Leisure Services recently awarded Oceanside Parks and Recreation Manager Eileen Turk with the 2016 Helen I. Pontius (HIP)  National Award of Merit in Chicago on September 21.   The HIP award is the single most prestigious recognition awarded by the organization.  The award is presented annualy to people who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in their community.

Crown Heights Halloween Festival October 29 The Crown Heights Halloween Festival is an event hosted by North County Lifeline's Club Crown Heights After School program and the City of Oceanside. Be ready to be scared as Crown Heights youth put together their annual haunted house. It's a project that takes all month for the youth to plan for the enjoyment of one night. Each year this event grows in attendance and it's filled with activities for kids of all ages.  This year there will be arts and crafts, games, jumper, food for sale, and of course Club Crown Heights Haunted House. Admission is $3.00 for haunted house only, all proceeds made from this event will go to support the Club Crown Heights soccer team in their journey to Nationals in Clearwater, Florida.






Oceanside Unified School District news - Oceanside High School (OHS) is undergoing a major construction project resulting in limited onsite parking.  To alleviate parking concerns during home football games, a free shuttle will be provided that runs from Mission Elementary School, located at 2100 Mission Avenue in Oceanside, directly to OHS.   OHS is urging all spectators to use the shuttle, which takes about five minutes.  Free shuttle service will begin approximately one hour before kickoff and continue for 30 minutes after the game ends.  Click here for a shuttle map and alternate parking locations that are in close proximity to the school.  You can also visit the school's website for additional information.  Please be advised that spectators may not park in the shopping center directly across from the school.  This is a private lot, and you may be towed at your own expense.






Vista Unified School District news - The Vista Unified School District (VUSD) includes portions of Oceanside, with about 1/3 of its students residing in Oceanside. Check link for VUSD news on how students are making remarkable improvements.





O'side Turkey Trot November 24 - The 11th Annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O'side 10k or 5k run/walk Turkey Trot will take place on Thanksgiving day, so move your feet before you eat!  Join one of the fastest growing holiday traditions, and bring the whole family; there are races for everyone.  This event offers a costume contest, largest teams competition, fabulous live entertainment on the course, and finisher medals and free digital photos for all registered participants.   




Free Whale Watching for Kids in October  - Oceanside Adventures, which leaves from the Oceanside Harbor,  offers free rides for the smallest adventurers in the month of October.  You must call 888-507-1130 to purchase one full-priced adult ticket  and two children (up to age 12) are free.

Mira Costa College LIFE Program - Learning is for Everyone (L.I.F.E) is organized for the seniors in North San Diego County, but is open to all ages. LIFE meets most Friday afternoons at the Oceanside campus from 1-3:30 p.m. and offers guest speakers, discussion groups, and other activities. Fascinating meeting topics include coming programs such as Species Rescue, Robotics, San Diego Opera, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and the Golden Age of Radio.
