Sales Tax Ballot Measure - The City's first priority is protecting the safety of our citizens and maintaining a quality of life we all value in our community. To provide stable, local funding to meet these needs, the City of Oceanside is placing a one-half cent sales tax measure on the November 2018 ballot. Find out more on the City website and take a moment to review the Frequently Asked Questions.

Beach -150.jpg

Beach Sand Replenishment...Where's the Sand? - The City of Oceanside is dependent on the Federal Government's Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) for all of its beach nourishment efforts.  Unfortunately, this year, the Corps announced it would delay its annual maintenance dredging of Oceanside Harbor, typically expected to begin in spring, which results in more sand for City beaches. The certification used in previous dredging operations expired, and a new permit was not obtained by the Corps in time to conduct dredging in May. The Corps has been monitoring the Harbor entrance channel depths to determine if dredging will be necessary in the fall, or if it can wait until spring 2019. The City has requested that the Corps dredge and place sand on beaches both in fall 2018 and spring 2019. Meanwhile, the City’s Public Works Department is monitoring construction sites that may have sand, as the City has a permit which allows “beach quality” sand to be placed on City beaches when opportunities arise.  More

Climate action plan - 150.jpg

Climate Action Plan Update - The Draft Climate Action Plan (CAP), a component of the Draft Energy and Climate Action Element (ECAP), is being revised to include a 75% renewable energy goal. The addition of this goal will allow the City to show emissions reduction consistent with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the state’s long-term emissions reduction targets.  The City expects to release the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Draft Economic Development Element (EDE) and ECAP in late August 2018. During the state-mandated 45-day public review period, the City will host a community workshop on the Draft ECAP, at which time the specific emissions reduction measures of the Draft CAP will be outlined and discussed. The date, time, and location of the community workshop will be announced on the City’s webpage before the end of August.  More

City Awarded Two Bike-Related Grants - The first grant, Environmental Study for the Coastal Rail Trail across Loma Alta Creek from the TransNet Smart Growth Incentive Program, would extend the existing Coastal Rail Trail limits in the City of Oceanside by creating a Class I bicycle and pedestrian path that spans across the Loma Alta Marsh between Oceanside Boulevard and Morse Street. This connection will improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility.  SANDAG awarded $400,000 with a City match of $100,00 for this project.  The second grant, a Bike Station at City Hall from the TransNet Active Transportation Grant Program, would establish an enclosed bike parking facility to support downtown business employees. This will provide secured bike parking for 40 bikes and hopes to promote increased bicycle commuting. SANDAG awarded $70,000 with a City match of $30,000.

Coast Hwy Cor Study-1.jpg

Coast Highway Corridor Study Environmental Impact Report (EIR) - The City of Oceanside is embarking on an effort to study and begin the design process for the street enhancements and changes proposed as part of the Coast Highway Vision and Strategic Plan. This effort, called the Coast Highway Corridor Study, will assess existing and future transportation conditions along the corridor to identify the preferred approach to implementing the recommendations contained in the Coast Highway Vision and Strategic Plan. Last summer, the Draft EIR was completed and released for public review and comments.  The traffic component and other technical studies are being updated as part of the response to comments.  A revised Draft EIR will be re-released to the public for a second round of review and comments by late October.  The final EIR will be presented to the Planning Commission and then the City Council in February or March of 2019.

BV Lagoon 150.JPG

Buena Vista Lagoon Enhancement Project - SANDAG is the lead agency for the Buena Vista Lagoon Enhancement Project.  They are evaluating four alternatives: three enhancement alternatives (freshwater, saltwater, and a saltwater/freshwater hybrid) and a no project alternative.  The Final EIR (Environmental Impact Report) was  prepared, along with responses to comment letters.  SANDAG announced mid-July that they have postponed a decision on project alternatives until late 2018 in order for stakeholders to have sufficient time to  review the large amounts of information on the enhancement project.  To sign-up for email updates on this project, please click here and select “Buena Vista Lagoon Study.”
