Coast Highway Corridor Study Status Update - The Coast Highway Corridor Study Final Environmental Impact Report and response to comments are posted on the project webpage. The Planning Commission will review the project at its June 10 meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The City Council is anticipated to review the plan this summer. Additionally, a fact sheet was prepared to help answer questions on the proposed Incentive District along Coast Highway. Learn more

Oceanside Harbor Dredging Complete - The Army Corps of Engineers' (Corps) contractor has completed the annual dredging of the entrance of the Oceanside Harbor to ensure safe navigation for vessels. The Corps estimates the total amount of dredged sand is approximately 220,000 cubic yards. City staff continues to seek opportunities to gain beach quality sand from coastal developments through our Sand Compatibility Opportunistic Use Permit and other project options.

Short-Term Rentals (STRs) - An Ad Hoc Committee (AHC) and City staff developed recommendations on STRs intended to minimize potential adverse impacts and outline expectations for STR operators and guests via a Good Neighbor Policy. The proposed regulations address maximum occupancy, parking, complaint response time, minimum night stay, noise and an enhanced enforcement protocol. The recommendations will be presented at a City Council Workshop on June 12, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. More information

City receives CalTrans Sustainable Communities Grant - CalTrans recently awarded the City of Oceanside a Sustainable Communities Grant of $398,385. City Planners will use the grant funding to develop a vision for smart growth along four major commercial and industrial corridors (Oceanside Boulevard, Vista Way, Mission Avenue, and Coast Highway). This vision will be a critical precursor to and component of a comprehensive update of the City’s General Plan.

El Corazon Aquatics Center - Work continues on the planned Aquatics Center at El Corazon. Construction bids are scheduled to be accepted late summer with a contract awarded shortly after. The Center will include a competition pool, spectator seating, locker rooms and family changing rooms, warm water instruction pool, splash pad for children, shade structure, concession area, multi-purpose classroom, and offices. The Aquatics Center is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2021.

Beachfront Improvement Plans - Beachfront improvements are scheduled to begin in Fall 2019. The 1930's era beach restroom will be remodeled to serve as a new Police Department Substation. A new, wider staircase will be constructed with a landscaped viewing area. The existing sewer lift station will be reconstructed. The plaza under the Pier will be beautifully remodeled. A new building will be constructed to include new restrooms and inviting storefront areas. A small service building will house pumps and controls for the sewer lift station and beach cleaning equipment. Construction is anticipated to take 18 months to complete. View renderings

City Council Meetings - The public is welcome for all City Council meetings at 300 N. Coast Highway. The next meeting dates are June 5 and June 19. There are no City Council meetings in July. Council meetings are also shown live on KOCT on two Wednesdays of each month and replayed throughout the week. Check the agenda and minutes to read about the issues the City Council is addressing. Innovate 78 - Innovate 78 is the collaborative effort of five cities (Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, and Escondido) to attract new business to the 78 corridor and promote economic development and job growth in the North County San Diego region. StartUp 78 is an initiative between Innovate78 and San Diego Regional EDC to help fuel startups in this unique region by uniting and amplifying the resources available to entrepreneurs along the 78 Corridor. Flag Retirement Ceremony June 15 - When the U.S. flag becomes worn, torn, or faded, it's time to replace it, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. Bring in your worn flag between the hours 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m on June 15, 2019, for proper care. The ceremony will be held at the Oceanside Fire Department Training Center, located at 110 Jones Road in Oceanside. Free refreshments!

Oceanside Tourism Impact - Tourism continues to be on an upward trend in Oceanside, according to recent reports by Visit Oceanside, the destination marketing organization for the City. There's been a consistent increase in visitors, travel spending and travel industry employment over the last eight years with 2018 reaching record highs. According to the most recent study, visitor spending in Oceanside in 2018 was $382 million, representing a 6 percent increase from 2017. The visitor spending directly supported more than 3,500 jobs in Oceanside. The City of Oceanside uses lodging tax funds (TOT) to support vital city services including parks, recreation, and public safety.

Downtown History Walk June 8 - The Oceanside Historical Society will be host a Downtown History Walk at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8. The two-hour history walk will begin at the front of the Oceanside Public Library at 330 North Coast Highway (look for the Andrew Jackson Myers plaque) and talk about the historical significance of local homes, churches, banks, three Irving J. Gill buildings, the Oceanside Pier & bandshell, and a variety of other sites. These walks are free (donations accepted) and open to everyone, and are pleasantly paced, so folks of all ages can participate.

Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow June 8-9 - People of all ages will enjoy attending the 23rd Annual San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians Powwow on June 8-9 at San Luis Rey Mission, located at 4050 Mission Avenue in Oceanside. Beautiful cultural traditions are kept alive in this two-day event featuring arts and craft booths, food vendors, tribal music, dancing, and more!

Save the date! Super Girl Pro July 26-28 - More than 100 of the world's top professional female surfers will be back in Oceanside for the 12th annual Super Girl Surf Pro, a 3 day event July 26-28. The weekend will be jam packed with competitions that will have you on your toes and a festival village loaded with vendors, activities and entertainment. The event is free to attend! The Super Girl Pro is the only World Surf League 6-Star event in the U.S., and it offers valuable points for surfers to qualify into the Women's Championship Tour in 2019.

Oceanside Unified School District News - California School Districts must create a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) to address State Priority Areas by setting goals, establishing actions and services, and describing how the district will use its budget to achieve those goals. Oceanside Unified School District developed a draft 2019 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), based on new data and stakeholder input. OUSD is seeking feedback from parents and community members on the proposed LCAP.

Vista Unified School District News - The Vista Unified School District (VUSD) Board of Trustees approved David Jaffe as Vista High School (VHS) principal beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Jaffe recently served as superintendent of the Rancho Santa Fe School District. He has also served as principal at Torrey Pines High School, assistant principal at Diegueno Middle and La Costa Canyon High Schools, and was founding principal of Canyon Crest Academy. Additionally, he served as the executive director of curriculum and instruction for the San Dieguito Union High School District.
