Coast Highway Corridor Study Status Update - The City Council will consider the project and the EIR at a Workshop on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 300 N. General Plan Update - On May 8, the City Council adopted the Economic Development Element (EDE), Energy and Climate Action Element (ECAE), and Climate Action Plan (CAP). Together, these documents demonstrate the City's commitment to growing the local economy in ways that promote environmental sustainability and social equity. These documents constitute the first phase of a comprehensive General Plan Update (GPU); the next phase will involve the updating of all of the City's existing General Plan elements i.e., Land Use, Circulation, Housing, Community Facilities, Conservation and Open Space, Safety, and Noise. Beachfront Improvement Plans - The City recently learned that it will receive a grant award of $7.84 million from the California Natural Resources Agency for the Beachfront Improvements project. Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2019. The 1930s era beach restroom will be remodeled to serve as a new Police Department Substation. A new, wider staircase will be constructed with a landscaped viewing area. The existing sewer lift station will be reconstructed. The plaza under the Pier will be beautifully remodeled. A new building will be constructed to include new restrooms and inviting storefront areas. A small service building will house pumps and controls for the sewer lift station and beach cleaning equipment. Construction is anticipated to take 18 months to complete. View renderings

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Oceanside - What is an ADU? An ADU is a second small dwelling on the same grounds (or attached to) your regular single-family house (also known as granny flats, in-law units, or tiny houses). Short-Term Rentals (STRs) - The City Council approved Short Term Rental regulations at its June 12, 2019 meeting. The regulations aim to minimize adverse impacts and outline expectations for STR operators and guests. The regulations address maximum occupancy, parking, complaint response time, minimum night stay, noise and an enhanced enforcement protocol. More information

Safe Routes to School Project - This nationwide program was launched last spring and aims to create safer conditions around schools, and encourages students, parents, and school staff to walk or bike to school. Thank you to the principals, administrators, and families who joined us. We completed 11 school site assessments and walk audits. Seventy-two parents participated in the school walk audits. Commuting behavior data was collected in 235 classrooms and counting. 404 parents responded to the online parent survey. The project will continue this fall. City Council Meetings - The public is welcome for all City Council meetings at 300 N. Coast Highway. The next regular meeting dates are August 7 and August 21 at 5:00 p.m. There will also be a Council Workshop on August 14 at 2:00 p.m. regarding the Coast Highway Corridor Plan. More information on that item is at the top of this newsletter. Regular Council meetings are also shown live on KOCT on two Wednesdays of each month and replayed throughout the week. Economic Development News - Oceanside has a dynamic business climate with new restaurants, retail shops, and manufacturing businesses moving into the City. The City's Economic Development Division assists businesses with expansion and relocation to Oceanside by offering site searches, business visits, demographic and statistical information, and assistance with permit processing and business license issuance. Wildfire Prevention - The Oceanside Fire Department recommends you maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around your home or business. The buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surrounds it can slow or stop the spread of a fire. Property owners are also responsible for clearing weeds on their property. There are many ways you can help to prevent wildfires from starting. Learn more.

Coffee with a Cop - Join us Thursday, August 22 between noon and 2:00 p.m. at Submarina at 2183 Vista Way in Oceanside. No agendas or speeches, just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know your neighborhood Officers. Coffee with a Cop events are held every month at a different location in Oceanside to discuss issues and get to know eachother. We hope to see you there!

Oceanside Historical Society - St. Malo, Oceanside's Secret Hideaway - Over many decades, many residents and visitors have often wondered who lived beyond the gate at the end of Oceanside's South Pacific Street. An impressive entrance allowed but a sneak peek into beautiful homes with unique architectural features. Kenyon A. Keith, a wealthy resident of Pasadena, purchased 28 acres of oceanfront property in 1928. The following year he began developing a colony with custom built homes that were designed to resemble a French fishing village, St. Malo. Residency was by invitation only and limited to family and hand selected friends. Learn more

North County Health and Wellness Fair August 8 - The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce will hold its 13th Annual North County Health & Wellness Fair on August 8 between 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Oceanside Civic Center Plaza. The event will feature a variety of health-related free screenings and demonstrations. The Health Fair is free to the public and a great way to receive information, meet a new health specialist, take advantage of free screenings and learn more about healthy living. The Health Fair will run concurrently with the popular Thursday Mainstreet Oceanside Farmers' Market.

35th Annual Longboard Surfing Contest and Beach Festival August 10-11 - This year’s event will honor Women in Surfing, celebrating early pioneers of the sport and current day competitors. This two-day family friendly event will be held at the Oceanside Pier and Amphitheater. Admission is free. Beyond the world class surfing competiton, there will be a variety of activities and entertainment for all ages.

KOCT news - Oceanside Community Service Television Corporation (KOCT) was formed in 1984. KOCT was made responsible for providing Public, Educational, and Government (PEG) access programming to the citizens of North County San Diego. KOCT - Voice of North County is celebrating over 35 years of community television service. KOCT is a non-profit Corporation that provides programming and services on Cox Communications Channels 18 and 19, as well as on AT&T U-Verse. KOCT also hosts a website, koct.org, where both channels are available via streaming video and many programs are available as Video on Demand. KOCT provides live coverage and replays of all regular City Council meetings, produces and airs documentaries, news briefs, election programs, talk shows and a variety of other community programs. KOCT also provides a Community Calendar so that local non-profit agencies can publicize their events. Oceanside Unified School District News - El Camino High School, Ivey Ranch Elementary, North Terrace, and Santa Margarita schools have been named to the 2018-2019 Educational Results Partnership Honor Roll (ERP) for their high achievement in student success. The program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes.
