Oceanside named 1 of 14 California Cultural Districts -The California Arts Council announced in July that Oceanside was chosen as one of 14 Cultural Districts in a new statewide program.  The innovative new program will highlight thriving cultural diversity and unique artistic identities within California. The District partners are: the City of Oceanside--represented by the Oceanside Public Library and Oceanside Arts Commission (an advisory body to the City Council), the Oceanside Museum of Art, and MainStreet Oceanside. Together they bring a focus on inclusivity, creativity, talent, and economic development to the forefront in the District. Selection for the California Cultural Districts was conducted through a multi-step process, including an open call for initial letters of intent, a peer panel review, site visits for semi-finalists, and an invited finalist application. Designation includes benefits such as technical assistance, peer-to-peer exchanges, and branding materials and promotional strategy.

City Council District Elections -  On May 3, 2017, the Oceanside City Council adopted a resolution to begin the process to transition to district elections. Once implemented, this means that those who run for City Council will need to live in the district where they seek election. The Mayor's seat will continue to be elected at-large. Five community meetings were held in May to learn about the process, provide input and work together to develop draft maps. On June 21, 2017, the City Council voted 4-0 to direct staff to bring forward the "Communities of Interest Map" for final approval.   At the City Council meeting on July 25,  the Council introduced an Ordinance establishing by-district elections for City Council offices and approved an election calendar for the newly created Council Districts.  On August 1, 2017, Council will take the final vote on the District map (agenda).  To view the District Election map, videos of community meetings, background information and more, please visit http://bit.ly/2q2Otp1. The webpage contains an interactive map; scroll down, click on map icon and zoom in to view your neighborhood district.

Overload at Tyson Park 150.jpg

'Pack it in, pack it out' at parks and beaches Trash of all kind impacts the community, sea life, birds, and pollutes our waterways. Overflowing trash and recycling cans leave a bad impression and tax City resources. When visiting Oceanside's parks and beaches, think ahead and become part of the solution.  Whatever you bring to the beach should be taken with you;  "Pack it in, pack it out!"  Let's work together to sustain healthy and vibrant natural spaces in Oceanside, now and into the future.

Oceanside Transit Center update - Construction activity at Oceanside Transit Center moved to the northern area of the project's Platform 1 beginning in June. The primary work, which will be ongoing through the fall, will be focused on removing and replacing the older platform with one that is raised to accommodate level boarding for Amtrak passengers.SANDAG and NCTD ask passengers to allow extra time to find their new boarding location during construction, and not trespass in construction areas or on the railroad right-of-way, as this poses great safety concerns to passengers as well as crews and operators. Construction is anticipated to be complete in late 2017. Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the Oceanside Transit Center. The project will enhance the capacity and reliability of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) coastal rail corridor, improve schedule efficiencies and travel times, and modernize the station for a better rider experience. To learn more about the project, call 858-549-RAIL, email LOSSANRail@KeepSanDiegoMoving.com, or visit KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/OTC.

Oceanside Unified School District News - On April 28, the Board of Education voted to transition from at-large Board Member elections to by-district Board Member elections in accordance with the California Voting Rights Act. Currently, OUSD Board Members are elected by voters from across the entire school district. In a by-district election system, the school district will be divided into sections, or voting districts, and voters from each section will elect one person who lives in that section to fill a seat on the board.  At a special school board meeting on June 26, the Board of Education adopted a voting district map and a sequencing plan. The adopted map was approved by a 3 to 2 vote and can be viewed at www.oside.usIf approved by the San Diego County Office of Education, the map and election process will go to the California Board of Education. If approved, the new election process will begin in 2018.
