City Manager to Retire, Incoming City Manager Named - City Manager Michelle Skaggs Lawrence announced her retirement, which will begin mid-October.  She has tirelessly served the City of Oceanside for the past 30 years. This dedicated and valued leader will be missed, we wish her well!  The City Council appointed Assistant City Manager Deanna Lorson as the City's next top administrator at their meeting on September 25.  Ms. Lorson has worked in several California Cities and Counties and has held the position of Oceanside's Assistant City Manager for the past 3 1/2 years. (Photo:  Deanna Lorson, left.  Michelle Skaggs Lawrence, right).

Coast Highway Corridor Study Status Update - The City Council voted to move forward with the project at a Workshop on  August 14. The project aims to improve traffic flow with roundabouts, make streetscape improvements, improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and enhance access to transit. Additionally, an Incentive District was approved along a stretch of Coast Highway. Learn more

Crime down in Oceanside - SANDAG released the mid-year crime report, which compiles and analyzes regional crime data.  Overall crime rate in Oceanside had a drop of 15% between 2015-2019 and 1% from 2018-2019.  Check the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) website for crime prevention resources and sign up for OPD Nixle alerts by texting your zip code to the number 888777.

Coffee with a Cop October 2 - The Oceanside Police Department invites you to join us for coffee Oct. 2 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Crown Heights Resource Center, located at 1210 Division Street in Oceanside.  These informal get-togethers are held every month at different locations. They're a great chance to discuss issues, voice concerns, and get to know your neighborhood officers. Please join us!

Census 2020 - The City of Oceanside, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, will be attending various community events to promote and educate about the importance of participating in the upcoming 2020 Census. Census results affect your voice in government and determine how much funding Oceanside receives, creates jobs, builds schools, roads and hospitals. Responding to the 2020 Census is easy, safe, and important. In March 2020, most households in the U.S. will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You are encouraged to respond as soon as possible. The Census Bureau will begin following up with homes that have not responded in May 2020. There are three options for responding: online, by phone, or by mail. Personal information is kept confidential. Census information is combined to produce general statistics.  More information

Drive-in Movie Site on Mission Avenue - The property owner, Zephyr Oceanside, LLC, submitted a formal application on August 29, 2019 for an active sport oriented mixed-use development consisting of retail commercial space, office space and a variety of recreational uses, including a surfing wave pool, rock climbing walls, bike paths/trails, a fitness center, a yoga pavilion, and a spa on approximately 35 acres at the southwest corner of the project site.  The plan also includes a proposal for 700 multi-family residential units on approximately 35 acres at the northerly and easterly portions of the project site and a 300-room hotel.  Approximately 20 acres of the project site would be preserved as open space.  The requested approvals include an application for a Tentative Map, for the subdivision of the property, an application for a Development Plan, for approval of the site plan and design of the project, and  an application for a Conditional Use Permit, for approval of the Mixed-Use Development Plan.  More information

City Council Meetings - The public is welcome for all City Council meetings at 300 N. Coast Highway. The next regular meeting dates are October 9 and October 23 at 5:00 p.m.  Regular Council meetings are also shown live on KOCT on two Wednesdays of each month and replayed throughout the week. Economic Development News - Oceanside has a dynamic business climate with new restaurants, retail shops, and manufacturing businesses moving into the City. The City's Economic Development Division assists businesses with expansion and relocation to Oceanside by offering site searches, business visits, demographic and statistical information, and assistance with permit processing and business license issuance. Fire Department Open House October 11 - The Oceanside Fire Department invites you to its Open House at Fire Station 7, located at 3350 Mission Avenue.  The Open House runs from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Bring the whole family for a day of exploration and learning about fire safety and community resources.  You'll view vehicles, public safety demonstrations, fire prevention methods, and meet your local firefighters.  We hope to see you there!

Community Emergency Response Team - Did you know that Oceanside has a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)? CERT is about readiness and people helping people. It's is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens' actions make a difference. Through training, people can manage utilities, put out small fires, provide basic medical aid, rescue victims safely, and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective. The CERT program now has over 600 trained community members and City employees. Interested in training? The next CERT training begins in mid-October. More info

It's Rideshare Week - Participate in Rideshare Week, hosted locally by the iCommute Program.  Try ridesharing by choosing to carpool, vanpool, or take transit to work.  Through October 4, enjoy $1 flat fee rides with Waze Carpool--for commuters, by commuters. Take transit on Free Ride Day, Wednesday, October 2, with MTS and NCTD in conjunction with California Clean Air Day.  Jump on any fixed route like the bus, the COASTER, or a trolley and enjoy a free ride!

Oceanside Senior Expo October 10 - The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosts this annual free event at Civic Center Plaza from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This popular event will feature over 60 health-related businesses, non-profits and senior organizations.  In addition, exhibitors offer variety of free health-related screenings and demonstrations for the public. Pride by the Beach October 12 - Located at Oceanside Civic Center Plaza, this family-friendly Pride Festival will feature a game section, a mainstage, performances by local musicians, historic AIDS Quilt exhibition, and a photo shoot from Together Strong. 14th Annual O'sideTurkey Trot November 28 - Come “move your feet before you eat!” this Thanksgiving morn at Oceanside’s 14th Annual  O’side Turkey Trot 10k Run/ 5K run/walk and Senior 1 Mile.  Voted one of America’s top trots!  There will be something for everyone: runs, walks, costume contest, largest teams competition, fabulous live entertainment and finisher medals for all participants.  Start training now!  The O'side Turkey Trot Free Running Club meets Tues. & Thurs. from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. to train.  Email for information

KOCT news - Oceanside Community Service Television Corporation (KOCT) was formed in 1984. KOCT was made responsible for providing Public, Educational, and Government (PEG) access programming to the citizens of North County San Diego. KOCT - Voice of North County is celebrating over 35 years of community television service. KOCT is a non-profit Corporation that provides programming and services on Cox Communications Channels 18 and 19, as well as on ATT U-Verse. KOCT also hosts a website, koct.org, where both channels are available via streaming video and many programs are available as Video on Demand. KOCT provides live coverage and replays of all regular City Council meetings, produces and airs documentaries, news briefs, election programs, talk shows and a variety of other community programs.
